I had a very nice moment yesterday. I went to the theater last night (Iron Door Playhouse – website coming), where folks are well into rehearsals for Fiddler on the Roof, directed by my wife. I am the lights and sound guy, and it’s time for me to start showing up.
I walked in and one of the kids from the library group I ran this summer was there. He ran to his backpack, grabbed a copy of Brandon Sanderson’s Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener’s Bones and zipped over to me, showing me he was within 20 pages of the end. “Thanks for telling me about these books!” he said. “They are my favorite books ever!” We talked Alcatraz and other bookish things during breaks in rehearsal for the rest of the evening.
I regularly go through these periods where I feel overloaded and overburdened and overextended. I complain about it as if it’s not my own fault that I’m spread thin. Moments like that take all those thoughts away, and show me what’s worth my time.
